Do you like lake trout so much and have been wanting to catch one of your own? Well, it’s possible to do so and it does not need any special skill in fishing for you to do it. You would need more patience though to catch some.
Here are some cool tips that you can follow on how to catch your own lake trout for your next fishing session.
Catching Lake Trout
- Go fish where the water is cooler
If you haven’t known about lake trout by now, then you should know that lake trouts strive in cooler waters. This type of fish actually prefers colder temperatures where they can grow bigger and multiply their kind. Don’t be surprised why fishing during the colder months brings bigger yield than the summertime.
When you prefer during summer, the lake trout tends to hide underneath the water to stay cooler away from the heat. You can still fish around this time. However, lake trouts might not be that visible to catch.
- Use colorful baits when fishing
Especially during the colder season, most lakes are darker and less visible even at daytime. Also, lake trouts like to hide in darker waters for survival and to cool their bodies. It might be challenging to use a bait that lake trouts won’t see and can affect your yield when fishing.
Go for bright colors for your bait the next time to lure more lake trouts even in the dark. Pick neon colors, pink, red, green, silver and other bright colors that the trouts can easily see. Baits such as jerkbaits are a perfect fishing tool especially when trouts are too deep like 10 feet or more. Once the trout grabs on to the bait, jerkbaits can perfectly drag the fish up top without having a chance for it to get loose.
- Use a spoon to lure lake trouts
Little did we know that we can find perfect tools for fishing from our kitchen. Spoons because of its bright color of silver are actually a perfect bait to lure lake trouts making your job much easier. Sink the spoon and wait until one of the lake trouts will take the bait.
This strategy works really well especially with depth-targeting in fishing. It only requires less movement that might distract or scare away the lake trouts from approaching the spoon bait.
- Learn how to create deeper ripples
Lake trouts are highly attracted with deep ripples in the water. To lure the trouts to the ripples, you will need a 30 lbs test line and fluorocarbon to be dropped at the bottom of the lake. This strategy will help you create a lot of ripples to help lure the trouts.
The fun part begins when you need to catch the trouts by grabbing them straight from your hands. Be sure you’re ready for the action and never let the fishes slip out from your hands. Have a bucket ready to store the fresh lake trouts.
- Bring sturdy fishing tools
You’ll never know how big the lake trouts are this season and most of all, you don’t want to fish unprepared. A full adult lake trout can weigh up to 18kg, that’s pretty heavy for a small fishing rod to carry and handle.
Be sure that you have at least a set of medium-heavy rods for catching bigger trouts. You can also opt for a lighter rod in case you only want to catch the smaller ones. However, the bigger and heavier the better. Also, be careful that your rod thread won’t get tangled once the trout takes the bait. It might be a challenge for you to pull it in if it’s all tangled and messed up.
- Don’t let the lake trout get loose
As you wait for your big catch, never lose sight of your rod. As soon as the rod moves, be prepared to position the trout and be able to pull it up inside your boat. If you’re using weak baits, trouts will most likely be able to escape and will leave you with no chance of catching any.
Be sure the rod is stable enough where you positioned it on the boat. Also check from time to time for any movements and feel free to adjust the rod. You can ask a friend to assist you when pulling if the fish is too heavy to pull out.
- Take advantage with depth finders
If you don’t want to lose your chances, there’s a better and easier way to catch more lake trouts in no time. Depth finders are a perfect fishing tool to trace where the lake trouts are. It helps you navigate where the lake trouts are currently hanging out so you can position your bait perfectly.
Now you’re more knowledgeable with setting up a bait to catch more lake trout, we hope that you’ll have better yield on your next fishing session.
